Sunspots Program
We talk about what the Sun is and how much bigger, brighter, and hotter it is than the Earth. We talk about sunspots, and then go look for them using safe solar viewing equipment. We make a flipbook to show how the appearance of the Sun changes. Moon Program
We talk about how the Moon looks and how various people have seen a "man in the moon", a rabbit, and a frog. We experiment to show how the Moon looks different at various times because of sunlight and the moon's shadow. We show how craters are scattered all over the Moon's face. Space Rocks
We talk about what makes up the solar system - not just the Sun and planets and their moons, but also all the "leftovers". We talk about space rocks (meteors), giant space rocks (asteroids), comets, what they are made of and the craters that they make. Mars Program
We explore how Mars looks compared to the Earth, and what it would be like to be there. We touch on various timely topics including the Mars opposition in summer 2001, the huge dust storm in fall 2001, and the current and recent Mars missions. Light & Color Program
We show that we can bounce (reflect), bend (refract), and break (diffract) light, using common household items. We see how light is used both in our everyday lives and also by astronomers seeking answers to questions about the stars and space. Schedule of Past Programs
We gave a total of 24 programs at several of the branch libraries in Howard County. The programs were scheduled by each branch Children's Librarian according to local needs and available resources. This ended up requiring many programs to be given in the spring. Demand was so high we also gave more programs the following fall. |
