Materials
  • Meteorite examination
    • A couple of meteorites
    • A few rocks (obsidian, lava, granite)
    • A small magnet
  • A moon made of flour
    • Small swimming pool
    • 30 lbs of flour
    • Large can of chocolate drink mix
    • Approx 30 small rocks
    • Tarp, newspapers
  • Make a comet
    • Ice shaver machine
    • Ice cubes
    • Sand
    • Clean pebbles
    • Dust (chichilla dust - fine pumice - works well)
    • Bowls (approx. 30)
    • Paper towels (to clean hands)
  • Pictures of comets, asteroids, Comet Shoemaker-Levy

  • Do rocks fall from the sky? About shooting stars and meteors.
  • What do meteorites look like? Inspect some meteorites and rocks. Use magnet on iron-nickel meterorite.
  • What happens when they hit the Moon? Pictures of craters on the Earth and Moon.
  • Take turns making craters in the flour Moon. Does it look like the real Moon?
  • What are comets? Dirty snowballs. Pictures of comets.
  • Make little comets from ice, sand, pebbles, and dust.
  • What happens when a comet hits something? Jupiter and Comet Shoemaker-Levy. Pictures.
